Cleft Lip & Palate
- A cleft lip is an opening in the upper lip; a cleft palate is an opening in the roof of the mouth. In both cases, an opening forms because the facial structure doesn't close completely during development.
- A child can be born with one or both of these conditions.• The majority of children treated for cleft lip or palate grow up to have completely normal lives.
- Most affected children will not have any other serious medical problems and treatment can usually improve the appearance of the face and problems with feeding and speech.
- Most times, cleft palate repair is done when the child is older, between 9 months and 1 year old. This allows the palate to change as the baby grows. Doing the repair when the child is this age will help prevent further speech problems as the child develops.
